Saturday Qualifying

Scott Pruett
took pole position in qualifying, despite a late challenge from Gil de
Ferran. The rain paused for the two half-hour sessions, with sun
breaking through to dry the track for faster times at the end of the
second session. |

Local hero Parker Johnstone in his Team Kool Green Reynard-Honda on
Firestone tyres was disappointed with his 19th place in qualifying,
but did much better in the race, finishing 9th.

Scottish-Italian Dario Franchitti was racing all weekend. The
rookie qualified 5th in the Firestone equipped Hogan Racing
Reynard/Mercedes-Benz.

Bryan Herta could only manage 12th place in his Shell Team Rahal
Reynard/Ford on Goodyear tyres.

Raul Boesel in the Brahma Sports Team Reynard/Ford/Firestone
qualified 14th.

Englishman Mark Blundell qualified 11th in his Motorola PacWest
Mercedes Reynard/Firestone, but went on to win the race.

Back after his accident in Australia on April 6, Christian
Fittipaldi qualified third in his Kmart Budweiser-sponsored
Newman-Haas Swift/Ford/Goodyear despite still having a 14-inch steel
rod in his right leg.

The Target Twins, Jimmy Vasser and Alex Zanardi, in their
Reynard/Hondas, who just couldn't muster up enough speed to get them
any higher than the fourth row of the grid.

Gil de Ferran took his Valvoline/Cummins Special Reynard/Honda to
within a tenth of a second of Pruett's time.
|

|
Veteran driver and team owner Bobby Rahal qualified the Miller Lite
Reynard/Ford Cosworth tenth.
|
Strolling back to our hotel on Saturday night we came across one of
Parker's spare cars gracing the lobby of the hotel where Team Green
(and many press) were staying.
