the Festival Curves on Sunday June 21. |

Bryan Herta makes a good start ahead of Dario Franchitti, but Greg Moore is in an over-optimistic mood,
passing seven cars on the front straight before realizing he can't
stop! He spears Christian Fittipaldi on the entrance to the Festival
Curves (top left of picture).
Christian spins and mayhem ensues, with drivers trying to avoid the
mess on all sides.
Michael Andretti has to drive across the grass to get round the
stationary cars, but soon gets stuck on the kerb and stalls, requiring
a tow to get started again.
"What did you do that for?" screams Christian. Through
the dust thrown up by cars driving over the gravel track we see that
they picked up Paul Tracy too, and his day is done.
Soon after the restart from the full-course yellow, Adrian
Fernandez is already hounding Jimmy Vasser with Gil de Ferran close
behind.
Scott Pruett is second with Alex Zanardi gaining on him.
Fernandez tries to slip down the inside of Vasser on the entrance
to the chicane on lap 10, but he catches the Target car and it spins.
See his left front wheel as he slides off the track.
A second full-course yellow flag as Jimmy is pushed to get started
again. His car is only slightly damaged, but enough to affect his
performance for the remainder of the race.
Fernandez, of course, is out and walks back to the pits while his
broken car is pulled from the gravel trap.
Mark Blundell starts to make his way up through the field. It was
not to be his day, though. On lap 28 he unnecessarily pushes it too
hard with Vasser going into the Festival Curves and pulls over at turn
4 with too much damage to continue.

The first round of pit stops mixes things up. Herta makes a
strategic error by pitting under yellow on only lap 14. Green-flag
stops for the others from laps 34 to 46 leave Zanardi leading with
Pruett and de Ferran (here lapping Helio Castro Neves, Vasser and
Gugelmin) behind.
A yellow flag on lap 73, when Franchitti makes contact with P. J.
Jones under passing. Current leader Bryan Herta pits under the yellow
returning behind Zanardi who resumes the lead. The green flag waves on
lap 79 and Herta and de Ferran jostle for position coming into the
Festival Curves.
Side-by-side through the chicane, they make contact...
...and de Ferran's Reynard-Honda limps to a safe spot to call it a
day.
Gil waves to the crowd as he strolls back to the paddock.
For a while Arnd Meier (left) seems mysteriously high up the leader
board, although I think that was just the order of the pit stops. He
did finish a respectable 12th, though.
Mauricio Gugelmin had a relatively uneventful day, allowing him to
finish 7th.
Zanardi led the remainder of the race, gradually extending his lead
to 6.8 seconds. This was his second win in a row and the fourth
straight for Target Chip Ganassi Racing.
Anyone for donuts?

The action was the tussle for second place, but Herta was unable to
take Pruett, finishing just 0.27 seconds behind.
